The original name for Wears Valley was Crowson Cove, so named after its first settler Aaron Crowson. Other early settlers included Revolutionary War veterans William Headrick and John Ogle. These two family names are still familiar today. The Ogle family, especially, has a large role in the local economy.
Wears Valley is a beautiful valley that shares the same geologic features as Cades Cove and Tuckaleechee Cove. They are all called limestone coves, which contain the fertile soil that attracted the early settlers. Cove Mountain rises dramatically above Wears Valley. This mountain is the tallest mountain in Tennessee, outside the National Park.
