Along with the rest of Sevier County, Pigeon Forge was once part of North Carolina. Settlers first reached the area in the late 1700's, when the area was governed by North Carolina. Pigeon Forge was the site of a forge, built by Isaac Love. Ater, his son built the Historic Old Mill in 1830. The other half of Pigeon Forge's name is derived from the passenger pigeons that once populated the areas around the river of the same name. Although the pigeons are are now extinct, the community of Pigeon Forge preserves the memory of bygone days that brings to mind the rich diversity of life in the the wilderness frontier that was also once a part of the State of Franklin and now East Tennessee. Once just a wide spot in the road, Dollywood and the Great Smoky Mountain National Park have made Pigeon Forge one of the premiere travel destinations of the South. See more Pigeon Forge history.
