Once the Prohibition began in the 1920’s, Newport was meeting the demands of consumers who were willing to pay for illegal liquor. Throughout the 1920’s and 1960’s, Newport became very well known in the Southeast for their liquor production. The generations of knowledge on making moonshine and the ideal location of isolated woods and hollows was the perfect combination for Newport to develop a booming business for distilling and selling moonshine. Over time, law enforcement became stricter with the distribution of illegal liquor, and Newport was under close watch for illegal activity.
