Morristown Tennessee
The history of Morristown began with a European settler, Gideon Morris, who was a farmer from the East Tennessee settlement of Watauga. As long as it has been founded, Morristown has been known by its original name, given by Gideon Morris. There are no records existing that demonstrate land grants to anyone other than Gideon and his family. A record of Gideon Morris’s will, leaving property of 400 acres in 1817 to John Morris, can be found in the Jefferson County Court House, which is west of Hamblen County. This piece of land was originally given to Gideon Morris by the State of North Carolina. The record concludes that Gideon Morris lived on the 400 acre land until his death, in which he was buried in the Morris family graveyard located near the original family home. Morristown currently serves as the heart of the Lakeway Area for employment, educational, retail, entertainment, and medical services.
